Muhammadiyah sebagai organisasi dan gerakan sosial keagamaan didirikan oleh KH. Ahmad Dahlan (1868-1923) pada awal abad kedua puluh, tepatnya pada 8 Dzulhijjah 1330 H, bersesuaian dengan tanggal 18 Nopember 1912. Pendirian organisasi ini, antara lain, dipengaruhi oleh gerakan tajdîd (reformasi, pembaruan pemikiran Islam) yang digelorakan oleh Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab (1703-1792) di Arab Saudi, Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905), Muhammad Rasyîd Ridhâ (1865-1935) di Mesir, dan lain-lain.
